Not every cave is open: some are research or bat caves and stay closed. Whether there are tours, and when, is on the cave’s own website.

Good to know

  • Caves stay at about 10 to 15 °C all year – bring a jacket, even in high summer.
  • Tours are often booked out in advance, for example at Carlsbad Caverns; get tickets through recreation.gov first.
  • Shooting without a tripod: high ISO and a fast aperture. Flash is banned in many caves and makes flat pictures anyway.
